In 2004 Twoshotmedia was financed by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, through MTC Work Solutions, to create a print document for the benefit of the local Bankstown community. We also trained a number of local long-term unemployed people during the project, teaching them writing skills, editing and working with the press.

We started by finalising our book idea – we wanted to assemble words and images by immigrants to the Bankstown area, to tell their stories of how they came to Australia. We started collecting people’s accounts of their journeys, as well as photos and artworks from local migrant groups. We worked closely with Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre and the Migrant Women’s Quilt Project.

The finished product is Welcome Zone, a beautiful 30 page booklet designed by Stuart Gibson at Book Design Australia. It featured stories of travel and survival from Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Brazil, Afghanistan and Uruguay. It told of suffering and joy in Detention Centres all around the world.

Welcome Zone was an amazing project, and one that we are very proud to have worked on.
